Celebrate Deepavali/Diwali with caution: Know the common eye injuries caused by firecrackers
Diwali/Diwali celebrations are all about diyas, crackers and sweets. Almost everyone loves crackers and certainly age is not a factor for bursting crackers. But extra care must be taken when handling fireworks to avoid injuries. This is the time when a large number of eye injuries are reported in the country every year and most of these eye injuries are caused by sparklers, bombs and 'chakra' crackers. Not only persons handling firecrackers, but also bystanders are at risk of eye injuries.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali, Prof. Dr. S. Natarajan, Chief Vitreo Retinal Services, Dr. Agarwal Eye Hospital and Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, Dr. Agarwal Eye Hospital, a unit of Mumbai, has asked people to be more careful during eruptions. Fireworks to avoid eye injuries. An expert has highlighted some common eye injuries associated with fireworks accidents.
How dangerous can Diwali crackers be?
Eye injury can range in severity from mild irritation and corneal abrasion to retinal complications and open globe injury leading to potential blindness. Chemical injuries are caused by the chemicals contained in gunpowder mixed with crackers. Smoke and fumes from crackers can cause irritation, watery eyes, laryngitis and other throat infections.
Sparklers are dangerous because they burn at temperatures hot enough to melt gold (1,800 F). That temperature is about 1,000 degrees hotter than the boiling point of water, hot enough to melt glass and cause third-degree burns to the skin. Necessary precautions must be taken to avoid such injuries.
Most fireworks contain gunpowder, which causes these devices to explode. Because firework explosions are unpredictable, injuries can occur even if a person is careful or under supervision. Pollution levels peak during Diwali, with nitrous oxide and sulfur dioxide levels rising significantly.
Also, the level of noise pollution exceeds permissible levels. Flowerpots and exploding firecrackers are full of multiple small particles that travel at high speeds and cause mechanical damage to tissues.
Contact lenses can cause eye irritation if exposed to direct heat for long periods of time. Therefore, contact lens wearers should be doubly careful when bursting firecrackers.

Dr. Natarajan pointed out some of the major eye injuries associated with firecrackers. This includes:
Open Globe Injury: Full thickness injury of the eye wall
Closed globe injury: Injury to the globe without full thickness
Injury: Bruising around the eye
Lamellar laceration: A partial thickness wound of the eye wall
Laceration: Full-thickness injury to the wall of the eye caused by a sharp object
Penetrating Injury: Open globe injury with entrance wound
Perforating injury: Open globe injury with entrance and exit wounds
According to experts, patients with closed eye injuries will be treated on an outpatient basis and open eye injuries, corneal and scleral tears, traumatic iridodialysis with hyphema, suspected intraocular foreign body (IOFB) and globe rupture will require further treatment. Management and monitoring.
